New Helmet To Replace The One That Did Its Job

Thursday, February 19th, 2026

My old and new Shoei helmets. You can see the abrasions on the old one from just right of the middle on the chin bar and up and to the left.

My previous Shoei helmet gave its life for mine back on June 29 of last year and finally, today, February 17, I got a new one. Or more correctly, Judy did, a Christmas present, to replace the old one which she gave me as a birthday present some years ago. Thank you Judy.

Just a note: it’s not like I’ve been riding without a helmet ever since; like most motorcyclists I have several, but the Shoei was the best of the bunch.

I had looked at various helmets awhile ago and had considered different models and manufacturers but ultimately decided to just go with another Shoei RF-SR.

Judy went with me to Performance Cycle and the sales guy suggested the RF-1400 as an alternative. It cost about $150 more but he said it is quieter and a bit lighter, with the same level of protection.

I may have had some interest in that one considering that he said it comes in a yellow. The RF-SR does not. I could be interested in yellow as being more conspicuous, more visible, but they did not have any in stock. Why? He said very few people actually want a yellow helmet, but he could order it and it would be here in a week.

Judy was pushing me to go for it but quieter and a bit lighter don’t matter that much to me and I was already figuring on getting the RF-SR in white, which should be a lot more visible than my old black one. As long as the protective qualities are equal I just didn’t feel like doing the hassle of coming back when I could walk out today ready to go. Plus, I tried both of them on and the RF-SR felt more comfortable than the RF-1400.

So I went with the RF-SR in white. Then I asked them to transfer my communicator (speakers and wiring) from the old helmet to the new, which I had been told they are happy to do at no charge if you are buying either the helmet or the communicator from them. I’ve been carrying that communicator around in my jacket pocket ever since that crash. I guess I better get it out and get it recharged.

Shopping For Gear

Thursday, November 13th, 2025

I’ve known ever since that crash occurred on June 29 that I was going to need to buy some new gear. A new helmet at the very least, considering that the one I was wearing had done its job and needed to be retired. To that end, I visited Performance Cycle on Wednesday. My initial intent was to look at riding suits but I ended up looking at a lot more.

Ruling out black seems to leave only gray or gray
 with some neon yellow trim.

I’ve got several particulars I’m looking for in a riding suit. First, I want something highly visible, so black is out. With what’s available in the stores now that seems to narrow it down to gray or gray with some neon yellow trim. OK, I can live with that. Besides, I’m figuring on wearing a high-viz mesh vest over it all so that should be the more important factor.

I also want pants and a jacket that can be connected as one unit, at least as much as possible. Apparently that means zipping them together just in the back. Fine, that will do. And I want something with an inner liner for winter warmth.

Waterproof is another criterion. Here’s where it starts getting tricky. I recently read about how suits that keep you dry can also end up trapping moisture inside and that doesn’t sound good at all. Gore-Tex looks like the answer because it supposedly keeps moisture out but “breathes” so sweat can get out. I need to find that stuff I read before to see what the issue was.

I also want zippers that will not fail. The Rev-It! riding pants I have now have silicone(?) zippers in the vents and one of them has completely failed. It is stuck open–not the best in winter. Also, the main zipper came undone a while ago and it was very hard to get it back together and functional. The Rev-It! pants I looked at no longer use that silicone zipper and I would hope the metal zippers are better. But that would be a reason I might go with a different brand.

All that said, I identified several possibilities: the Klim Carlsbad suit, the Alpinestars Bogota suit, and the Rev-It! Sand 5 H2O. They’re all roughly the same price, around $1,000 total for the two pieces. Now I want to investigate all three to see what reviewers and users have had to say about their plusses and minuses. If you have any experience or recommendations on any of these please pass your thoughts along.

I also looked at helmets, glove liners, and warm base layers. Stevie, the Performance Cycle guy who assisted me, was very helpful and gave me all kinds of things to consider and choose between. I’ll get into those items next time.

Finally A New Tire On The V-Strom

Thursday, October 24th, 2024

I knew leaving on the OFMC trip this summer that as soon as I got back I would need to get a new rear tire on the V-Strom. We got back from that trip on August 1. I finally got the tire on yesterday. Yep, right away.

Tying this on was no big deal. I don’t know why I thought it would be.

Of course that means I got more miles out of the old one. Really getting my money’s worth. Really running on no tread at all. You get busy, you know, and things get put off.

I’ve still been trying to work out this issue of where to take my bikes now that Joel is no longer running his own shop and this time I figured I’d take it to One Down Four Up, a place out on West Colfax where I’ve had some work done before. They’re pretty far and not particularly convenient but what the heck. I’ve been happy with their work.

So I called a few weeks ago to see about getting it in and I asked the woman I spoke with what they suggest now that the parts store that used to be right next to them had closed. It was really convenient because you could go in and buy the tire and carry it next door and hand it to them. But not any more.

She said they suggest you get the tire at Performance Cycle and bring it in. That seemed pretty odd to me because Performance Cycle is pretty far away. Why not point me to a place on Colfax? I know there are some out there.

It was good that I wondered about that. That ticked off an idea in my head. Have they perhaps moved? Well, score one for me. They have moved, and now Performance Cycle is still not exactly close but it’s a heck of a lot closer than it was before. Also, more importantly, this makes One Down Four Up a lot closer to me, too. I may just have finally solved my problem of where to take my bikes for service.

However, that did not address the issue of how to get the tire from the store to the shop. I have never, ever had to face that issue before. I’ve always just taken the bike to the mechanic and he ordered the tire and put it on. I wasn’t crazy about picking up the tire in my car and then driving it over to the shop and leaving it there, then bringing the bike later. But then I figured it depended on whether they would be able to put the tire on while I waited. If they wouldn’t then I would need to have Judy pick me up there and bring me back later, and she could just bring the tire with her when she picked me up.

Well, they could put it on while I waited so that was out. I thought about putting the tire around my waist and riding over like that but that seemed silly. Here’s a daring thought: how about if I just tie the tire on the bike behind me?

I know that, for a lot of you who probably have done this yourselves, this is the obvious and simple approach. But remember, I’ve never had to do this before. Well it was simple, as you can see in the photo. And yeah, I didn’t get it tied on as stably as I thought, so it shifted a little in transit, but it worked fine. OK, now I know.

So when I called the shop to make an appointment they said, well, we can get you in later today or first thing tomorrow. Really? That quickly? Sounds good to me, let’s do today. And they did the job promptly, for a very reasonable price. And they were nice folks. I think I know where to take my bikes from now on.

Then just a side note. On my way home I was coming across on Belleview and saw this pick-up in the right lane with a sheet of plywood hanging out of the back of its bed bent almost to the road surface. I thought that was odd but assumed it just didn’t fit in the bed any better than that. I also noticed that the car behind this truck was giving them a lot of room.

As I pulled up alongside I could see that in fact the plywood had shifted back from the cab several feet and looked like it might slide out at any moment. I waved to get the driver’s attention and motioned urgently toward his rear. He pulled right over to see what I was telling him. I just wonder if he started out with more than one sheet of plywood, because that was all he had when I saw him.

Performance Cycle Goes Big

Monday, April 11th, 2016
The new Performance Cycle store.

Performance Cycle's new digs.

As did many thousands of other motorcyclists–apparently–I received a card inviting me to the grand opening at the new location for Performance Cycle on Saturday. New location: 7375 S. Fulton, in Centennial. I figured I wanted to see the place, so I went.

trying on helmets

Just an eye-catching scene I noticed.

The card had promised a schwag bag for the first 100 in the doors and while that wasn’t a big motivator I did think it might be cool if I got one and it had some cool stuff in it. Ha! Doors opened at 9 a.m. and I walked in around 9:45. By that time there must have been more than 100 people waiting in line to make their purchases. The place was packed, and that’s saying something because it is huge.

I don’t know if this is the biggest motorcycle shop in Denver but if it isn’t it has got to be one of the biggest. Completely new building with about anything you could want. Including a lounge with complimentary beverages and an air hockey table so you can while away the time while your bike is being worked on. A section for helmets that is bigger than some shops I’ve been in. A storage area for tires that looked like it must have a couple thousand tires on hand. And of course, pretty much any motorcycle gear or apparel you could possibly be looking for.

And apparently there were a lot of people looking for gear. I was just there for a look-see but most people seemed to be there as shoppers. I would not want to stand in line that long to buy but I guess the today-only 20 percent discount coupons they were handing out made a persuasive argument to a lot of people.

Will I shop here? Yeah, it’s in my part of town and I figure they will probably have anything I’m looking for. I might want to do some price comparisons, though. We’ll see.

And one other point in their favor: they’re open on Mondays.

Inside Performance Cycle's new space.

The place is huge.
