Mount Evans Road First to Close for Season
It’s getting to be that time of year. The road to the top of Mount Evans has closed, so that means other roads can’t be far behind.
Others that close for the winter include:
- Trail Ridge Road
- Kebler Pass
- Independence Pass
- the Pike’s Peak Road
- Cottonwood Pass
You can keep tabs on which of these are still open, as well as get real-time info on road conditions around the state at the Colorado Department of Transportation site.
The other roads are maintained all year round but you never know when they’ll be getting snow. The truth of the matter is, although I ride down here on the flatland all year round, I almost never ride in the mountains after October. There are more hardy riders than me, though. Redleg comes to mind. He seems to ride anywhere he wants any time he wants. You’re a better man than me, buddy.
Biker Quote for Today
Winter is nature’s way of telling you to polish your bike.

I’ve rode that road! One of the most intense rides I’ve ever had. Got a great photo of my friends under a rainbow as we rode down from the top. It had rained (surprise) while we were up there. After that ride there wasn’t a road in Colorado that seem that big of a deal. For flatlanders like us in Iowa the roads there can be a bit trying until we get use to to them. Also rode Trail Ridge Road a few times.Talk about fun! It’s a real test of skills after or during a rain.

not a better man, hardly. Perhaps more willing to ride in the cold…..cold and dry roads are OK, cold AND wet roads….not so OK. I have been known to snowblow a path out of my snowbound suburban neighborhood, true, but the main roads were dry by then….we’ll see how eager I am this coming winter with my June fall due to ice near the Eisenhower Tunnel.
