Tennessee PassTennessee Pass runs from Minturn over to Leadville on US 24. En route, it passes Red Cliff, an old mining town worth the detour. Take the turn off into Red Cliff and stay on the bypass and you'll come back out to US 24 in a few miles. Also of considerable interest is the remains of Camp Hale, where the 10th Mountain Division trained for alpine warfare during World War II. Doing battle on snowshoes and skis was central to their training. There are several campgrounds along US 24 but most are far enough off the highway on dirt roads so as not to be readily accessible by motorcycle, unless you’re on a dual-sport or dirtbike. There are two, however, that are easily accessible: Camp Hale and Hornsilver Campgrounds. Click on the campground icons for information and pictures. The sequence of the following photos is north to south, from Minturn down to Leadville. The first two are in Minturn, looking down the road and then an interesting shop on the outskirts of town: Next a couple shots looking back north and then we move on south: Along the way you pass the abandoned mining company town of Gilman, perched on the side of the hill. This whole area appears to be headed toward redevelopment into a huge resort so what you see now probably won't be there in five years: Then, at this trestle, just at the edge of the rock, a turn-off to the left will take you down to Red Cliff. The road winds through Red Cliff and then comes back out under the trestle and rejoins the highway about half a mile further along. This digression used to be the road, the only road, until the trestle was built: We took the route through Red Cliff and back out under the trestle. A little later you come into the valley where Camp Hale is located. Then up and over the pass. |
