Fremont PassColorado 91 heads south from I-70 at Copper Mountain and crosses Fremont Pass on its way to Leadville. Just before reaching Leadville it merges with US 24, coming up over Tennessee Pass from Minturn, just west of Vail. One not so scenic feature of this ride, but awesome in its scope, is the view you get of the Climax molybdenum mine, where an entire mountain full of molybdenum is being torn down and an entire valley is being filled with the rubble. Obviously, this project was begun long before the days of the Environmental Protection Agency and is one of the best arguments around for legislation protecting the environment. Below are some shots of what this pass looks like, going
from south near Leadville to north near Copper Mountain. The first is looking
back toward Leadville and then two shots looking north toward the pass: Next we're at the top of the pass. These three shots are two looking back the way we just came, and the third is of the Climax mine up at the top: Finally, one shot heading down on the north side of the pass and then one from just outside of Copper Mountain looking south, back up toward the pass: |
