Motorcycle Camping in the Lake Dillon AreaLake Dillon sits at the west end of Loveland Pass on U.S. 6 and the north end of Hoosier Pass on CO 9, where I-70 passes Silverthorne and Frisco. Although there are a variety of motorcycle-accessible campgrounds around the lake, many are currently closed and the ones that are open are a shadow of their former selves. The cuprit is the pine beetle, which has decimated the forests around here. The campgrounds that are open, Peak One and Heaton Bay, have been scalped of nearly all their trees, while the others are closed as the dead trees are removed. That said, the campgrounds are nice, if barren, with paved roads that make them easy to get in to and around in. One benefit may be that with the scalping, visitorship is down and it is easy to get a space. Plus, making this area a base gives you easy access to a lot of great Colorado motorcycle roads. Peak One CampgroundPeak One Campground is on a peninsula on the south side of Lake Dillon, accessible from CO 9, by Frisco. It has three loops with a total of 79 campsites. The campground is highly developed, with flush toilets, fire rings, water, tables, dumpsters--the works. The camping fee is $24 per night. Sites around Loop B can be reserved, while those around Loop A and Loop C are first-come, first-served. Heaton Bay CampgroundThe nightly camping fee is $24 at Heaton Bay Campground, which is accessible from Dillon Dam Road, which parallels I-70 between Frisco and Silverthorne, on the north shore of the reservoir. Be aware that the dam road is closed each night at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. The closure is from east of the campground to the Silverthorne side. You can always get to the campground from the Frisco side. One benefit of the closure is that there is less traffic noise in the campground at night than there would otherwise be. Heaton Bay Campground has 81 sites, broken up into four loops. On Loop D there are some tents-only sites that are especially good for motorcyclists. Despite the tree removals necessitated by the beetle kill, this campground still has more trees than other nearby campgrounds. Some of the campsites are still actually quite nice. The roads throughout the campground are good, smooth pavement. Amenities include tables, fire pits, flush toilets, and water.
