Kenosha Pass and South ParkOne of the motorcyclist’s best alternatives to I-70 is US 285. Coming out of the south side of Denver, US 285 runs up through Conifer and Bailey before it climbs Kenosha Pass and descends into South Park. South Park is an open, relatively flat – emphasis on “relatively” – area in the mountains that was once the summer home of the Ute Indians. US 285 then crosses South Park to Fairplay, where you can either head north over Hoosier Pass to I-70 at Frisco or continue southwest toward Buena Vista. There is one motorcycle-accessible campground along this route, Kenosha Pass Campground, a National Forest campground right at the top of Kenosha Pass (see the campground symbol on the map). These photos show US 285 as it leaves the Denver area and enters the foothills of the Colorado Rockies, and then some views near Conifer and Bailey. Next we see the summit of Kenosha Pass, looking out over South Park, and then a view up the pass from the bottom: As you cross South Park on your way to Fairplay you'll go up and over Red Hill Pass, a minor pass that nevertheless gives you a good view of the area: Back to top |
