Ripple Creek Pass
Known as the Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway, f irst be aware that this road is unpaved. That said, we rode it many years ago on our street bikes and made it, though the washboard road beat us up quite a bit. Much of the road is actually very good gravel but overall, it's better to do it on a dual-sport bike.
Coming either out of Yampa on Routt County Road 17 or from Phippsburg on Routt County Road 15, those two roads converge and become Routt County Road 132. Crossing the county line it becomes Rio Blanco County Road 8 and stays that way all the way through Buford to Meeker. The total distance is about 80 miles.
The road skirts north of the Flat Tops Wilderness, with lakes and mountains and meadows all around. As you finally descend to the small community of Buford you then find yourself following river valleys on the rest of the way to Meeker. I won't try to describe it, just check out the photos. I will note, though, that that second image shows a mudslide that appears to have covered the road and then been cleared away not that long before we were there. As always, click any photo to enlarge the image.
