Lizard Head PassRunning south from Ridgway, CO 62 meets CO 145 at Placerville and continues down to Dolores. Along the way, a short spur takes you into Telluride, which is a great place to spend some time. South of Telluride the road passes over Lizard Head Pass. At Dolores you are close to Mesa Verde National Park, probably the most famous – justifiably so – Anasazi Indian ruins in the U.S. There are a number of campgrounds along CO 145, including one right in Telluride. (Refer to and click on the campground symbols on the map at right.) Not surprisingly, Telluride City Campground is the one in town. Heading south Toward Lizard Head Pass you come first to Sunshine Campground and then Matterhorn Campground. Over the pass, as you near Dolores, you'll reach the very small town of Stoner. Just past Stoner, Dunton Road heads off toward (surprise!) Dunton. Mavreeso and West Dolores Campgrounds are a short distance up this winding, very scenic road. Here are some photos from between Placerville and Telluride: Then, here’s Telluride itself, including a shot from up on the mountain. In the summer you can ride the gondola up for free: Then we continue on over Lizard Head Pass, heading south: |
