Colorado Highways 67 and 126 and the Deckers Area
The run from US 285 at Pine Junction south on Colorado 126 to Deckers and on to Woodland Park on Colorado 67 is a favorite for riders in the area. For one thing, the Bucksnort Saloon, just outside of Pine in the tiny community of Sphinx Park, is a favorite watering hole frequented by everyone from your average joe to the likes of John Elway and Pat Bowlen, who come up on their own custom bikes. Further south, Deckers has long been a favorite mountain getaway offering scenery, terrific fishing, welcoming eateries, as well as camping and more luxurious accomodations. Continuing south out of Deckers you’ll pass through some very scenic areas that are currently interspersed with the charred remnants from one of Colorado’s biggest forest fires a few years ago. This is scenery of a different sort but very striking in its own way. In July 2006, heavy rains caused mudslides on the burned out slopes that blocked the highway, but the road was reopened in April 2007. And, as the third photo shows, not all of the area was burned. There are a number of campgrounds along these roads, although not all of them are motorcycle-accessible. Those that are include South Meadows, Colorado, and Painted Rocks Campgrounds along CO 67 just north of Woodland Park. Then, north of Deckers along CO 126 are Lone Rock and Kelsey Campgrounds. No photos along the road to the Bucksnort but here are a couple at the Bucksnort. It’s 1.3 miles on gravel up a tight canyon road but well worth the trip. The burgers are good, too.
