Motorcycle Camping Along CO 65 Over Grand MesaThere are five campgrounds on Grand Mesa along CO 65 that I consider to be motorcycle-accessible: Jumbo, Spruce Grove, Island Lake, Cobbett Lake, and Little Bear. Heading south acros the mesa, the first two you come to are Jumbo and Spruce Grove. The other three are clustered a little further on close to the Grand Mesa Visitor Center. Jumbo CampgroundJumbo Campground at Mesa Lakes Recreation Area is accessible via a good paved road running through it. It is the first campground you come to if you are coming up onto the mesa from the north side. Each of the 26 units has a table and fire ring, and the campground offers water, a dumpster, and vault toilets. Some of the sites have electricity, and most are shady. There is a lot of water on the Grand Mesa, and as a consequence, there are always a lot of mosquitos. Be sure to take bug repellent. The one night fee for a non-electric site is $18. Spruce Grove CampgroundSpruce Grove Campground can be reached via a short gravel road. There are 16 campsites, each of which offers a table and fire enclosure. The campground also has water, vault toilets, and a dumpster. Be prepared for mosquitos. The fee is $12 per night. There are no showers but you can go 3 miles to the Mesa Lakes Lodge and pay $3 to use theirs. There is a good gravel road running throughout. Island Lake CampgroundIsland Lake Recreation Area encompasses the whole area around Island Lake, with two campgrounds along the gravel road that circles the lake. The longer route is from the turn-off by the visitor center. The shorter route is from the turn-off a few miles further west. It's about a mile. The 41 campsites have tables and fire rings. The campground offers dumpsters and vault toilets. And mosquitos. The nightly fee is $18. Cobbett Lake CampgroundCobbett Lake Campground is directly adjacent to the Grand Mesa Visitor Center. It's a short ride on gravel from the main road to the campground. The roads throughout are gravel. The 18 sites cost $16 per night. Each site has a table and fire ring. The campground offers dumpsters, vault toilets, and water. As the name indicates, the campground is on the shore of a small lake. Little Bear CampgroundThe Little Bear Campground is about a mile and one-half south of the Grand Mesa Visitor Center via the gravel road that runs west from the visitor center. Going further along this road takes you to Island Lake Campground, mentioned above. There are 36 campsites, 4 of which are tent-only. Each site has a table and fire ring. The entire campground is very shady. Water is available, as are vault toilets. The nightly fee is $16. |
